The first part deals with the linguistic definition of the term "idiom", including possibilities for their classification. The second section of the first part is going to present the concept of euphemism followed by a brief explanation and categorization of metaphors and the attempt of giving possible reasons for the maintaining taboo of death in western culture. The purpose of the second part of this paper is to analyze and compare a number of English and German idioms of death contrastively, in order to identify lexical and semantic similarities, including the investigation of the origin of certain expressions. Subsequently, a short closing reflection will end up this paper.As death plays a significant role not only in western society but in communities all around the globe, idioms related to death became an important tool in human communication. But what is the actual purpose of using paraphrases in order to relate to death in an utterance? Why do idioms of death have a cultural importance and how is an idiom actually defined? Do certain idioms of death have the same semantic meaning in other languages?Human communication has created a great number of idioms and figures of speech which range throughout every section of the daily life and appear in every situation possible. As this phenomenon indeed shows its importance, linguists have created the field of phraseology to investigate such expressions. Based on language contact and historical events, many idioms have synonyms and equivalent counterparts in several languages. Learning the specific idioms related to a certain culture helps to get to know more about the history, ethics and social values of a certain community.

The crucial question is how these conventions look, what kind of language behavior is adequate in a certain situation and if it is understood in the context; these conventions differ interculturally. The speech act theory, whose pioneer is clearly John Austin (1955 'How to do things with words'), is an adequate approach to gain a deep insight in speech acts like greeting, promising or apologizing. This paper deals with the speech act set of apology. Apologies are clearly performative and expressive. They establish and maintain social contacts. All speakers of a language know certain patterns of speech act sequences, i.e. they know what has to follow after an apology and what is inappropriate. The ability to apply these patterns constitutes a part of communicative competence. In my paper I will focus on apologies made in an American soap opera, trying to find out the structure of this speech act also considering factors like social relationships and afterwards compare it to the dubbed German version. The aim of this paper is to draw a conclusion on whether cultural factors play a significant role for the translated edition and if the genuine is a prime example for this culture.

Many people consider this proficiency 'world class' (Nicolson/Fawcett, 2001: 146). However, a lot of people have problems with acquiring this skill due to several difficulties, mostly subsumed under the term of 'dyslexia'. Developmental dyslexia is seen as the most common developmental disorder in Western school populations and affects four times as many boys as girls (Fawcett, 2002: 265). It was not until the 1970's that dyslexia has been recognized as a specific learning difficulty. Rutter et al. (1970) and Yule et al. (1974) established specific reading difficulties and contributed to the acceptance of dyslexia. The problems were seen either extrinsic to the child, e.g. to do with society and school teaching, or intrinsic, i.e. within the child, which were to do with intelligence and gross neurological problems. By 1989 the International Dyslexia Association provided an expanded and clearer definition that highlights the range of difficulties dyslexic students may experience: 'Specific Learning Difficulties can be defined as organizing or learning deficiencies which restrict the students' competencies in information processing, in motor skills and working memory, so causing limitations in some or all of the skills of speech, reading, spelling, writing, essay writing, numeracy and behavior.' (Dyslexia, 1989) However, this is still a 'deficit' definition. Nowadays, dyslexia is seen as an individual difference in learning style. It is important for teachers to understand the nature of the reading and spelling process, as well as how it develops in children. Surprisingly, there is little of this in teacher training. It is fundamental to look at the processes that are involved in what we are going to teach, not only to provide us with an understanding of what is required but also to examine the areas where some children might find certain skills particularly difficult (ibid: 91). In my paper I will focus on the reading abilities of two of my private students who are both dyslexics. I try to find out whether the theoretical features of dyslexia made by researchers can be applied to these students. The aim of this paper is to draw a conclusion on whether the two students have difficulties in reading and how this is reflected in the prepared data.

In the first case, one may assume that gesture and speech are 'different sides of a single underlying mental process' (cf. McNeill 1992:1); in the second case, gesture and speech are rather independent. To accomplish this goal, the second chapter takes a closer look at the relationship between gesture and speech and the functions that have been supposed in the case of gesture. Thirdly, gesture production under pathologic circumstances is assessed by focusing at the topic of gesture production and aphasia. The possibility of a parallel or comparable impair-ment of speech and gesture in aphasia is reviewed, as well as gesture as compensating for speech in persons affected by aphasia (Chapter 3). The fourth chapter introduces a case study by Lisette Mol, Emiel Krahmer & Mieke van de Sandt-Koenderman (cf. 2012) to further investigate the research question. The subsequent paragraphs, then, discuss the study by Mol et al. (cf. 2012) in the light of other findings (i.a. Cocks, Middleton & Morgan 2011, McNeill & Duncan 2010; Kita & Özyürek 2003; Glosser, Wiener & Kaplan 1986; Orgassa 2005) regarding the topic (Chapter 4.) The last chapter draws a conclusion on the question whether speech and language break down in a similar manner and can be regarded as closely related or if gesture can function to compensate for speech in the case of aphasia.

In the last fifty years print media, television, and internet have proven to be important agents of social change even if their development has always been accompanied by censorship arrangements in the different political systems of the region. The Arab world has not been isolated from global changes in the media sector. Mass media, especially the Internet, and their importance for global economy are seen as motor of globalization but capital and technology are expanding faster than the development of trans-cultural communication is able to. This displacement in the action-reaction chain can be observed in the way global content and media are domesticised, transformed, controlled and rejected in the Arab countries and how important topics like cultural imperialism, indigenous values, international norms of journalism, and freedom of speech are discussed and negotiated in these societies.
