They are used to give life and richness to the language by taking the existing words, combining them in a new sense, and creating new meanings, just like a work of art.' (LEN-NON, 1998, cited in BULUT; ÇELIK-YAZICI, 2004: 105) This combination of existing words 'like a work of art' represents a huge challenge for non-native speakers they have to cope with in their language learning process. In the context of intercultural communication, non-native and native speakers interact with each other and often make use of idioms and other fixed expressions as 'the colourful side of languages', because they are used to it from their usual communication in their first languages. However, these fixed expressions constitute a special part of the language use due to particular characteristics, which will be explored further in this term paper. Consequently, communication between non-native and native speakers does not always runs smoothly when phraseological language comes into play. Amongst others, the cultural boundedness as well as native-like creative exploitations of the fixed expressions represent probable causes for misunderstandings. These aspects will be presented hereafter. Given the limited space of this term paper, the focus is on communication between non-native and native speakers. Phenomenon connected to the phraseological language in a lingua franca setting cannot be examined further. The crucial question is how these conventions look, what kind of language behavior is adequate in a certain situation and if it is understood in the context; these conventions differ interculturally. The speech act theory, whose pioneer is clearly John Austin (1955 'How to do things with words'), is an adequate approach to gain a deep insight in speech acts like greeting, promising or apologizing. This paper deals with the speech act set of apology. Apologies are clearly performative and expressive. They establish and maintain social contacts. All speakers of a language know certain patterns of speech act sequences, i.e. they know what has to follow after an apology and what is inappropriate. The ability to apply these patterns constitutes a part of communicative competence. In my paper I will focus on apologies made in an American soap opera, trying to find out the structure of this speech act also considering factors like social relationships and afterwards compare it to the dubbed German version. The aim of this paper is to draw a conclusion on whether cultural factors play a significant role for the translated edition and if the genuine is a prime example for this culture.

(Proverb) Proverbs usually have an element of truth. The German speakers will certainly also know the German equivalent 'Was Hänschen nicht lernt, lernt Hans nimmermehr.' Do these proverbs also apply to the acquisition of a second language? Are young learners trees that 'must be bent' before they are too old to reach a certain language proficiency? In first and second language research, the concept of a 'critical period' respectively of a 'sensitive period' was developed to explain probable advantages of children in the process of language acquisition. The aim of this term paper is to find out whether there is a sensitive period for second language learning and to explore possible explanatory approaches. Within this research, the 'Critical Period Hypothesis' (CPH) represents the major focus. According to this hypothesis, 'there is a period during which language acquisition is easy and complete (i.e. native-speaker ability is achieved) and beyond which it is difficult and typically incomplete' (ELLIS, 1997: 67). This means, it is assumed that language learners must begin at an early age to learn a language in order to reach native-like proficiency. Generally, empirical data from course books, handbook articles and journal articles as well as commentaries by different authors are used in order to follow the research question up. First, a framework concerning the origins of the idea of a sensitive period from first language acquisition, and the clarification of particular terms will be created. Then, the distinction between possible advantages of young learners in natural as well as instructional settings will be of interest. The findings on a critical or sensitive period have also found their ways into the pedagogical practice. It is obvious that especially bilingual kindergartens, that promote an early start in language learning in general, will somehow refer to the idea of a sensitive period in second language acquisition. Therefore, the second part of this term paper will present an analysis of pedagogical concepts of these kinds of day care institutions with respect to the integration of this idea.
