Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject German Studies - Comparative Literature, grade: 2,3, University of Erfurt, course: Contrastive Linguistics, language: English, abstract: This paper consists of two major parts, a theoretical framework and a contrastive analysis of idioms of death in the English and German language. The first part deals with the linguistic definition of the term "idiom", including possibilities for their classification. The second section of the first part is going to present the concept of euphemism followed by a brief explanation and categorization of metaphors and the attempt of giving possible reasons for the maintaining taboo of death in western culture. The purpose of the second part of this paper is to analyze and compare a number of English and German idioms of death contrastively, in order to identify lexical and semantic similarities, including the investigation of the origin of certain expressions. Subsequently, a short closing reflection will end up this paper. As death plays a significant role not only in western society but in communities all around the globe, idioms related to death became an important tool in human communication. But what is the actual purpose of using paraphrases in order to relate to death in an utterance? Why do idioms of death have a cultural importance and how is an idiom actually defined? Do certain idioms of death have the same semantic meaning in other languages?Human communication has created a great number of idioms and figures of speech which range throughout every section of the daily life and appear in every situation possible. As this phenomenon indeed shows its importance, linguists have created the field of phraseology to investigate such expressions. Based on language contact and historical events, many idioms have synonyms and equivalent counterparts in several languages. Learning the specific idioms related to a certain culture helps to get to know more about the history, ethics and social values of a certain community.

Jahrhunderts thematisiert die Rolle der Wissenschaften in demokratischen Staatswesen - eine Geschichte, deren Auswirkungen bis in unsere Gegenwart reichen."Sophia Dafinger's book contributes powerfully to our understanding of how air forces around the world embraced the amorphous concept of civilian 'morale' as one of the primary targets of strategic bombing. Drawing on the under-utilized records of the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey, she reveals the unusually large influence of social scientists in American bombing campaigns not only in World War II, but also in the Korean and Vietnam Wars."Sheldon Garon, Princeton University"Wer mehr über das wechselvolle Verhältnis von Politik und wissenschaftlicher Beratung wissen möchte, sollte dieses wunderbare Buch zur Hand nehmen.

Is there a sensitive period in second language ...

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Erfurt (Philosophische Fakultät - Fachbereich Anglistik), course: Second Language Acquisition, language: English, abstract: 'A tree must be bent while it is young.' (Proverb) Proverbs usually have an element of truth. The German speakers will certainly also know the German equivalent 'Was Hänschen nicht lernt, lernt Hans nimmermehr.' Do these proverbs also apply to the acquisition of a second language? Are young learners trees that 'must be bent' before they are too old to reach a certain language proficiency? In first and second language research, the concept of a 'critical period' respectively of a 'sensitive period' was developed to explain probable advantages of children in the process of language acquisition. The aim of this term paper is to find out whether there is a sensitive period for second language learning and to explore possible explanatory approaches. Within this research, the 'Critical Period Hypothesis' (CPH) represents the major focus. According to this hypothesis, 'there is a period during which language acquisition is easy and complete (i.e. native-speaker ability is achieved) and beyond which it is difficult and typically incomplete' (ELLIS, 1997: 67). This means, it is assumed that language learners must begin at an early age to learn a language in order to reach native-like proficiency. Generally, empirical data from course books, handbook articles and journal articles as well as commentaries by different authors are used in order to follow the research question up. First, a framework concerning the origins of the idea of a sensitive period from first language acquisition, and the clarification of particular terms will be created. Then, the distinction between possible advantages of young learners in natural as well as instructional settings will be of interest. T

Mobile Communication in Everyday Life
36,90 CHF *

The mobile phone has become an integral part of our everyday life communication – in this sense a domestication of a ‘nomadic’ medium has taken place. For the very reason that the telephone has left its fixed home environment, it requires us to take an ‘ethnographic view’ in describing both this development and the changes taking place therein. Mobile Communication in Everyday Life takes a closer look at the mobile phone as an object of inquiry in the tradition of the so-called media ethnography. Consequently, the bene- fits and limitations of such research designs are the focus of the book. Some contributions focus on the tension between private and public communication, others on cultural dimensions. Overall, the book presents a range of the most up-to-date research in the field of mobile communication. The Authors Joachim R. Höflich is a professor at the University of Erfurt, Germany. He is also a leading expert in the field of mobile technologies and interpersonal communication. Joachim has published several books on the topic in German as well as many articles in English. Maren Hartmann joined the University of Erfurt in 2004 (and can soon be found at the University of Bremen). Her research interests include media ethnographies, cybercultures and the domestication concept. She has published books as well as several articles on these topics.

Religiöses Bewusstsein und Politische Ordnung -...
19,90 CHF *

A Simulation-Based Approach and its Limits'' fertig gestellt hat. English Summary: Eric Voegelin believed that a morally acceptable and in the long run successful political order (which meant for the emigrant Voegelin primarily an order that is resistant to totalitarianism) can only be built on the foundation of a healthy religiosity of the citizens and the political leaders. The question of what a healthy religiosity or a healthy consciousness of the transcendent is was examined by Voegelin by recurring to intellectual history and to the philosophy of consciousness. In this book a detailed criticism not only of Voegelin's philosophy of consciousness but also of the concept of political order based on this philosophy is given. This criticism results in a rejection of any political theology of a Voegelinian or other brand and a resolute defense of the separation of religion and politics.

The findings on a critical or sensitive period have also found their ways into the pedagogical practice. It is obvious that especially bilingual kindergartens, that promote an early start in language learning in general, will somehow refer to the idea of a sensitive period in second language acquisition. Therefore, the second part of this term paper will present an analysis of pedagogical concepts of these kinds of day care institutions with respect to the integration of this idea. Website information of different bilingual kindergartens will serve as sources.
