Einzelausstellung "Bewusstes Unvermögen - Das Archiv Gabriele Stötzer ", Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig, 2019.Artist Gabriele Stötzer was the powerhouse of Erfurt's lively underground. After Wolf Biermann's expatriation in 1976, she herself was held on remand and put in the Hoheneck women's prison. Her one-year imprisonment did not silence her though. After her release, she ran an underground gallery and established a group of female artists. On 3 December 1989, she was the first to occupy the Stasi building in Erfurt together with a collection of like-minded people. More than twenty-five years after the event, Stötzer researched her own past and that of thirty-two fellow artists as recorded in the Stasi archives. She has written a factual report on the forms of observation that were used, exposing the internal logic of the surveillance regime. Her text-which was written for the exhibition Between Withdrawal and Action at the Kunsthalle Erfurt in 2014-is supplemented by original documents from the files and visual material produced by surveillance operatives.Gabriele Stötzer (b. 1953), photographer, author, Super 8 film-maker, and performer, lives and works in Erfurt. Her solo exhibition Bewusstes Unvermögen: Das Archiv Gabriele Stötzer is showing at the Leipzig Museum of Contemporary Art (GfZK) in 2019.

The Technique of Sampling and its Controversy i...

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,3, University of Erfurt, course: Hip Hop Studies, language: English, abstract: The aim of this paper is to take a look at the technique of sampling regarding the purpose, a definition and the origin of this method. Furthermore, emphasis will be put on the controversy of sampling, followed by a short explanation of the fundamental principles of the copyright law. Finally, a conclusion will summarize the core results and add some closing remarks to this topic. It only took two turntables and a microphone to turn a ghetto dominated by violence, into a united neighborhood and community filled with enough positive energy to create a music genre and culture that took over the whole world rapidly. Ever since the Hip Hop culture emerged in the 1970s in the dirty corners and hopeless streets of the South Bronx in New York, the vinyl record has played a huge role in the development and growth of this movement towards main stream culture. A simple vinyl record has been able to give poor people a way to transform their anger and desperation into art. Even in the age of digital technology, the so called black gold is still relevant, building the foundation for artistic disciplines like scratching and sampling.Since the early days, the technique of sampling has been the core element in making Hip Hop, be it adopting Bruce Lee moves and gymnastic elements to create a new dancing style, taking synthesizer- or vocal sounds for scratching, or the adoption and reconstruction of melodies and drum loops from dusty vinyl records to come up with a whole new way of music production. But can we really see this method as a creative and unique way of self-expression or is it rather a lack of creativity and even artistic laziness?

The dubious experiment in political economy and social engineering known as socialism, which distorted the functioning of Russia and the Eastern European countries and did horrifying damage to their populations for much of the twentieth century, left its mark on many industries. One industry, which has not received as much attention as other larger ones, is horticulture, with its subsector of floriculture. In 1945, at the end of World War II, Germany was finally divided into two sectors-east and west. By a curious fluke of history, the largest part of German flower production had long been situated in three eastern states, including Erfurt in Thuringia. East Germany inherited this wonderful industry, run by prosperous companies with enlightened owners and a background of constantly developing new and more beautiful plants. In my two previous books about the work of heroic flower breeders, it turned out that a number of them had ended up behind the Iron Curtain. Their new communist masters abhorred successful private industry and started to dismantle these firms as soon as they could in the name of building a 'socialist eden.' The result was tragedy. The leaders of the industry were often arrested, even killed, lost both businesses and the property on which they stood and, if they were lucky enough to escape to West Germany, gave up all their rights. The government collectivized the firms, setting up lumbering organizations to replace them. Prices were set, regardless of basic economic factors. There were no incentives to do a good job. The Benary family had been leaders in breeding begonias. Wilhelm Elsner was the third generation in his family to head a company that specialized in pelargoniums ('geraniums' to the rest of us). He was locked out of his nursery in Dresden and not permitted to enter it again until after the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. See what happened to so many others.

Modernity and ambivalence in Jewish national id...

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Jewish Studies, grade: 1,0, University of Erfurt, 21 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Zygmunt Bauman's theory explains how modern nation states categorise and define their population, as well as 'friends' and 'enemies' based on ethnical, cultural and historical homogeneity. In this process ambivalent elements, especially minority groups. are eliminated from the nation. For Bauman this structural inheritent development is the main reason for the failed assimilatory aspirations of the German Jews in the late 19th and early 20th century. Zionism as reaction to denied national identity in the host countries shows in itself the same structural elements which caused the exclusion of the Jews from the German society. Jewish nationalists applied similar strategies and methods of stigmatisation and displacement during the Jewish nation-building process on the native population of Palestine and the oriental Jews to construct national order and identity.
